Notes for Catherine HAAS
Catherine Haas Mather, 94, a fund-raiser and fixture at society events at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., died on Tuesday, March 15, at her home in Miami. She had lived in Strafford, Chester County.
She was 29 and the widow of Alden H. Miller when she married the divorced Charles E. Mather 2d, 37, on New Year's Eve 1945.
Mr. Mather was eventually president of the insurance brokerage Mather & Co. and chairman of the Valley Forge Park Commission.
The Mathers' daughter, Katie Scalamandre, wrote in biographical notes that her mother "dedicated herself to raising money for her various organizations."
A 1969 Inquirer story reported that Mrs. Mather was cochair of that year's Saratoga Performing Arts Ball, which took place after the opening summer concert of the Philadelphia Orchestra in Saratoga Springs.
At that time, the story said, she was a board member of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and recently had been elected to the board of directors of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association.
Her daughter wrote that Mrs. Mather was a trustee of Skidmore College, also in Saratoga Springs, where she "helped many students with scholarships over the years."
A 1974 Inquirer story reported that at its 126th anniversary gala at the Academy of Music, Hahnemann Medical College & Hospital gave her its distinguished-service award. The award carried the title of Woman of the Year.
"She was one of the very first women to be on the . . . board at Hahnemann Hospital" and was a board member of the School of American Ballet in New York City, her daughter said.
Mr. and Mrs. Mather ran a stable of thoroughbred horses and raced them under the name Avonwood Farm.
The Mathers ran the farm in Strafford from the 1940s until Mr. Mather died in 1982, her daughter said, and though they had a house in Saratoga Springs, they had no stables there.
"The horses at the farm were mares and foals, not the ones racing, as they lived at the racetrack," at Saratoga and other venues. "They did not buy and sell much as they bred their own horses."
Besides her daughter, Mrs. Mather is survived by stepsons Peter and Victor Mather, a brother, and a sister.
A memorial service was set for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, in Washington Memorial Chapel, Route 23, Valley Forge National Historical Park.
