Notes for John Steele Jr. DOWNING
John S. Downing Jr. of Coatesville John S. Downing, Jr., 90, of Coatesville, passed Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at his home. He was the husband of Elizabeth "Bette" W. Downing, who preceded him in death in 2007. Born in Elsmere, Del., he was the son of the late John S. and Mary Downing. He graduated from high school in Lenoir, N.C. in 1938. John served in the United States Army during World War II with the 3rd Infantry Division in the European Theater. As a 1943 graduate of Guilford College in North Carolina, John majored in English, History and Physical Education. Additionally, he took courses at Michigan State University, Michigan Central, North Michigan College of Education, West Chester State and Penn State University. He earned two Master's degrees in Education and English. John lived in Michigan from 1946 to 1952 before moving to Coatesville. Retiring in 1983, after 39 years of teaching, John spent 31 of them as a language arts teacher at Gordon Jr. High School. During his teaching career, he was also involved in athletics as a track and football coach. He was a member of Doe Run Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and on various boards. Prior to that he was a member of East Fallowfield Friends. John was a member of the Coatesville Lions Club, Coatesville and Parkesburg Senior Centers, Pennsylvania State Educators Association, National Education Association and Michigan Education Association. Surviving him are two daughters, Susan D. Miller of Coatesville and Katherine A. Fiore of Bridgeton, N.J.; two sons, John S. Downing, III of West Chester and Walter T. Downing of Massillon, Ohio; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph F. Downing. Family and friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at the Harris-Mountain Funeral Home, 1030 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. Private interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville.
