Helen Briner Cubberley, 93, former Postmistress of Deerfield Street, died peacefully Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2007 at her home in Woodstown where she had been a resident the last 6 years. Mrs. Cubberley had been a resident of Deerfield Street and a former resident of Bridgeton.
The wife of the late C. Victor Cubberley, they were married for 55 years at his death in 1989. She was born in Princeton and was the daughter of the late William L. and Emma Bailey Briner. Mrs. Cubberley was a 1930 graduate of Trenton High School. She continued her education by earning a bachelors degree in secretarial science from Ryder University in Trenton.
During World War II, she worked as inspector grader at Seabrook Farms. She spent 24 years as the Postmistress in Deerfield Street and will be fondly remembered by those she served.
Mrs. Cubberley enjoyed painting and collecting American Indian artifacts. For nearly 30 years, she and her husband spent every summer at their home at Gandy's Beach.
She was a longtime member of the Cumberland Chapter No. 145, Order of the Eastern Star as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also an active member of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church in Deerfield and was a past President of the Women's Guild of the church.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara C. Schalick and her husband Oakford of Centerton and Judy C. deWilde and her husband Robert C. of Pittsgrove Twp., 5 grandchildren, Karen Morales and her husband Abram of Montclair, Barbara Ann deWilde of Upper Montclair, Oakford Schalick III and his wife Julianne of Pittsgrove, Carolyn A. Schalick of Centerton and Steven Schalick and his wife Rebecca of Elmer and eight great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3 at 1 o'clock at Deerfield Presbyterian Church, Old Deerfield Pike in Deerfield with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Larter officiating. The interment of cremated remains will take place in the church cemetery following the service.
