Notes for George IRWIN
George Irwin came from Londonderry, Ireland about 1720 and settled in Fenwick Colony in west New Jersey. Fenwick Colony was the first English settlement on the Delaware River. The Hancock and Matlack families were among the most prominent families in the Fenwick Colony and the Irwins married into these families. In 1721, while living in Burlington County, New Jersey, George Irwin married Jane Matlack, the daughter of William and Mary (Hancock) Matlack. George and Jane were married by the Justice of the Peace "out of meeting" and lived for a while with her brother, Joseph Matlack, as they were "personna non grata" in the Quaker Community. In 1738 George and Jane Irwin moved to East Caln Township, Chester County to be near his brother, Edward, who with his wife Sarah Woodward held a patent on land. Edward and Sarah Irwin were among the first who settled in what is now Brandywine Township. Edward Irwin was one of the first Ruling Elders of the Presbyterian Church in Forks of the Brandywine. In 1738 George Irwin purchased 250 acres from Martha Parker.
NOTE: Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania was divided into West Caln and East Caln, today it is known as Brandywine Township.
