Samuel S. Stroud, 83, of Lafayette Hill, former headmaster of Germantown Academy and an educator at the Haverford School, died of complications from hip surgery Tuesday, March 1, at Chestnut Hill Hospital.
Mr. Stroud was appointed head of Germantown Academy's lower school in 1961. He oversaw the lower school's move from Germantown to Fort Washington and the admission of girls to the formerly all-boys school. He was later assistant headmaster and became headmaster in 1966.
In 1970, Mr. Stroud resigned to return to his alma mater, the Haverford School.
In a letter announcing his plans, he reminded Germantown Academy's board of the crucial nature of student unrest in secondary schools. "The 'angry young men' seem to be younger each year," he said. "It behooves us to try to help them learn not to be angry."
During his 10 years at Haverford, Mr. Stroud taught math in the middle school and history in the upper school and was director of admissions for two years. He also coached an undefeated golf team for several years.
In 1980, when he left the school, the senior class dedicated the yearbook to him, saying: "Mr. Stroud has always been eager to advise us in any manner possible. He seems always to engage his work with a certain eagerness as well as an unselfish willingness to help others."
From 1980 until retiring in 1990, Mr. Stroud operated a consulting firm for students seeking placement in independent schools. He served on the board of the Agnes Irwin School and was active with the Country Day School Headmasters Association.
Mr. Stroud grew up in Villanova and graduated from the Haverford School in 1945.
He was a Navy medical corpsman in the Pacific and in occupied Japan and then served with the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, a Pennsylvania National Guard unit.
Mr. Stroud earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Mask and Wig Club and the Delta Psi fraternity. He later earned a master's degree in history at Penn.
