Notes for James Melville HUTCHISON
James Melville Hutchison of Wilmington, Del., formerly of West Grove James Melville Hutchison, 97, of Wilmington, Del., formerly of West Grove, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011. Jim was born on July 29, 1913, in New London, the son of William Gibson and Kathrine Fleming Hutchison. In 1923, his family moved to a farm in West Grove, where he lived for most of his life. He attended Kennett High School and the University of Delaware where he graduated in 1935 with an Engineering degree. He joined the Electric, Hose and Rubber Company in Wilmington., Del. and worked there until 1971. He served his country in World War II as a lieutenant in the artillery division of the Fifth Army in North Africa and Europe and in the Army Reserve until 1953. In 1948, he married Matilda Freida Wisk of Smyrna, Del. In 1955, his family returned to West Grove where Jim farmed until age 86. He enjoyed many interests including geneology, agriculture, nature and his extended family. He was pre-deceased by his wife; his brother, William Gibson; and his sisters, Elizabeth Buermann and Kathrine Clarke. He is survived by his children, William Gibson Hutchison of West Grove, James Melville Hutchison, Jr. of Wilmington., Del., Elizabeth Hutchison Taylor of Branford, Conn., and Janet Anne Hutchison of Burke, Va.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the New London Presbyterian Church, New London, on Wednesday, Feb. 9th. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Chester County Historical Society, 225 North High Street, West Chester, PA 19380.
