Lumber firm president, 92
Henry S. Hilles, 92, of Gwynedd, a retired lumber company president, died of heart failure Sunday at Abington Memorial Hospital.
After graduating from Germantown Friends School and Williams College in Massachusetts, Mr. Hilles joined Smedley Bros. lumber yard in Frankford, which his uncles opened in the 19th century. He later became company president.
After retiring in the early 1980s, he continued to enjoy working with wood, completing home improvement projects and splitting logs at his vacation home in Greentown, in the Poconos. He also enjoyed tennis and growing vegetables.
Mr. Hilles was a lifelong member of First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Lee Walker Hilles; sons Henry Jr. and Robert; a sister; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hilles donated his body to science. A memorial service is private.
