Eleanor B. Perry
Eleanor B. Perry died peacefully at the Westerly Nursing Home on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at the age of 93.
A resident of Westerly, Eleanor is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles Perry and their three children and their spouses: David B. Perry and Laureen Pierre of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Harvey C. Perry II and Sarah Perry of Westerly; and Charles "Carl" Perry Jr. and Rachel Bedard of Mountville, Pa. Also surviving Mrs. Perry are her five grandchildren and the spouses of two of them: Ethan F. Perry and Meredith Cornett of Duluth, Minn., Laura Perry and Dana Blumenthal of Ft. Collins, Colo., Matthew Perry of Barnesville, Ohio, Robert Perry of McLean, Va., Isaac Perry of Mountville, Pa., and one step-grandson, Renaldo Pierre of Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, Mrs. Perry has three surviving great-grandchildren, Charlotte C. Perry, Quinn P. Blumenthal and Kai P. Blumenthal.
Mrs. Perry was born on March 18, 1916, in Cambridge, Mass. Her parents, who predeceased her, were Paul L. Butler and Bessie W. Smith. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Paul L. Butler Jr., and Robert C. Butler.
Eleanor graduated from Adelphi College in 1938, and earned her master's degree in library science from Simmons College. After earning her degree, she was librarian for Butler Hospital in Providence. She was also librarian for the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) Library in Philadelphia, Pa., for many years.
With her husband, Chuck, she was active in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, assisting African-American families to move into all-white neighborhoods in suburban Philadelphia. Always ready to engage in intellectual discourse, she pursued a deep and abiding interest in the relationship between religion and psychology for most of her life. In 1989, Mr. And Mrs. Perry retired from Bryn Mawr, Pa., to a family home in the Haversham community of Westerly, overlooking Quonochontaug Pond. She was active in the Westerly Friends Meeting (Quakers) for many years, until declining health began to restrict her activities.
A memorial service will be held for Eleanor Perry at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the Westerly Friends Meetinghouse located at 57 Elm St., Westerly.
