Notes for Justine Van Rensselaer HOOPER

Justine "Nita" Van Rensselaer Hooper Milliken died in the early morning of Aug. 4, 2003, surrounded by family at her summer home in Northeast Harbor, Maine.
She was born in 1921 to Justine and Roger Hooper. After graduating from Winsor School in Boston, she matriculated at Vassar College but graduated from Radcliffe College due to the war.
After working in Boston, Washington and New York, she married Roger Milliken in 1948. They moved to Spartanburg, S.C., from New York in 1954, where they raised five children.
Mrs. Milliken was a founding trustee of Spartanburg Day School, where she served on the board for 40 years. She initiated, and for many years organized, the school's annual book sale to benefit the library, which is named in her honor. She was also a faithful trustee of Converse College in Spartanburg for many decades. In addition, she served as a trustee of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Mrs. Milliken enjoyed painting and had a life-long interest in the arts. She was a leader in the creation of the Spartanburg Arts Council, receiving the David Reid Award. She was active in the Episcopal Church of the Advent and Natural Resources Council of Maine.
She served for many years as a trustee of Northeast Harbor Library and was a member of the Vestry of St. Mary's by the Sea. She was also a member of the Cranberry Club.
Nita was passionate about things both large and small, from the beauty and delicacy of a flower to the preservation of islands. She supported institutions that sustained the creativity of human beings. She is deeply loved and shall be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Roger; her children, Jan Russell, Nancy, Roger Jr. and David and Weston Milliken; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Roger Hooper, of Ross, Calif.
Funeral services for the family will be held Aug. 7, 2003, at St. Mary's by the Sea in Northeast Harbor. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Church of the Advent in Spartanburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of the Advent; Converse College; or to Spartanburg Day School.
