Gibbons Gray Cornwell Jr., 83, a West Chester businessman and civic leader, died Feb. 25 at his home in West Chester. He was a graduate of the Haverford School and Yale University.
Mr. Cornwell worked for the Denney-Reyburn Co., a West Chester manufacturer and supplier of office supplies, labels and tags, for 48 years. He served as president and then as chairman of its board of directors from 1945 to 1973.
He was a former member of the executive committee and past president of the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute in New York.
Mr. Cornwell served as burgess of West Chester from 1950 to 1954 and held a number of borough posts in later years. He was a former member of the executive committees of the West Chester Civic Association and the West Chester Sesqui-Centennial.
He was a director of the Southeast National Bank from 1946 to 1972 and director of the Downingtown Paper Co. from 1949 to 1967.
Mr. Cornwell served on the board of managers of the Chester County Hospital from 1949 to 1976 and was president from 1957 to 1972. He was president of the board of trustees at West Chester State College in 1939-40.
He also served as chairman of the Chester County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, as a member of the board of governors and president of the West Chester Golf and Country Club and as treasurer of the Oaklands Cemetery.
The Chamber of Commerce proclaimed him West Chester's outstanding citizen in 1962.
He was a member of the West Chester Hunt Club.
After his retirement, he pursued his interest in needlework and bas-relief. In 1972, he donated molds for a medallion to the Chester County Bicentennial
Commission. He created the 175th anniversary coin for West Chester and a U.S. bicentennial medal.
A member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, he sang in the choir, served as superintendent of the Sunday school, was vestryman and former accounting warden.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ward Cornwell; a daughter, Ann Hemphill; sons, Dr. Gibbons G. 3d, Daniel, William P. and Timothy; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Ward and Leslie DeCou; a stepson, Taylor Ward; nine grandchildren, and a brother.
