"Dick" was a native Wilmingtonian, born Aug. 9, 1916. He graduated in 1934 from Wilmington High School, where the southpaw was a star member of the tennis team and selected to play a exhibition match with Bill Tilden, a three time Wimbledon winner. As a drummer he received awards for performance in marching and jazz bands. Sport and music became lifelong passions.
He began his career with the DuPont Company when he was in high school. While working fulltime, he attended Wharton Business School where he earned a degree in accounting. He worked as an accountant in DuPont's Finance Department and retired in 1981. Afterwards, he continued his accounting practice until he was 90.
1942 was a pivotal year in his life and his country's. He enlisted in United States Army, embodying the heroic virtues of a group of men who became known as the Greatest Generation. He was a first sergeant in the 446th anti-aircraft battalion and fought in the European theater, including the Battle of the Bulge.
Like many young men prior to embarking on the dangerous war mission, he married the first love of his life, Leilah Ruth Naylor in 1944. Their romanced blossomed while playing tennis on the Rodney Street courts. At the end of the war, the couple helped launch the Baby Boom generation, raising two sons and a daughter in Deerhurst. The couple spent their retirement years enjoying family and friends, traveling, dancing and other activities at the DuPont Country Club. Mr. Lloyd was his wife's caregiver during a lengthy illness. When she passed away in 1996, Mr. Lloyd rekindled his passion for tennis, playing doubles three days a week. He continued playing until April of this year. He also excelled at horse shoes and table tennis, passing on his love of healthy competition to his family. He tossed ringers while celebrating his 94th birthday in August and shared volleys on the ping pong table on Thanksgiving Day at his son's home.
On Valentine's Day, 2003 he married Audrey Hazel at Hanover Presbyterian Church where she had been a lifelong member. Life at Hanover was central to their lives. They had an active and rewarding life together, enjoyed bringing their families together and loved to travel, including a cruise along the Rhine where Mr. Lloyd fought in WW II. Audrey passed away Nov. 14 of this year.
Mr. Lloyd is survived by his sons, Richard Porter Lloyd, Jr. and his wife (Gail) of Newark, Stephen Naylor Lloyd (Kathy) of Wilmington, Janice Naylor Lloyd (Julia) of Fairfax Station, VA, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Delaware Hospice, Somerford House and Place and Christiana Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Friday, December 17, at Concord Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held at the church immediately following. The internment will be private.
