Notes for Emily MARIS
Tribune, The (San Luis Obispo, CA) - December 29, 2006
Deceased Name: Emily Maris Gibson
1915 - 2006
Emily Maris Gibson passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, in San Luis Obispo. Emily was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Newcastle, Wyo., to Ralph W. Maris and Mary McBroom Maris. Her sister Barbara Maris Jones passed away 16 days prior to Emily. They were only 15 months apart in age, and were very close all of their lives.
The sisters and their families always gathered for oyster stew on Christmas eve, a 125-year Maris Family tradition. It would seem that Barbara came to get Emily Christmas eve morning so they could share oyster stew again that evening. The Maris family moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1922 where she attended local schools, and witnessed the destruction of her school, Poly High, in the 1933 earthquake. Emily graduated from University of Redlands in 1938, and became an elementary teacher starting at a small country school in Alberhill, Calif. She taught in the Westminister and Alpine School districts for 30 years, becoming a reading specialist and a well-known educational puppeteer. She traveled with Bill Martin, author of children's books, demonstrating puppet making and "Reader's Theatres" to teachers throughout the country.
Emily was married to William H. Gibson in April 1942. They lived in the Seal Beach and San Diego areas for many years before retiring to enjoy their RV in Arizona, Pismo Beach and Hemet. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1997.
Emily is survived by her son Maris L. Gibson of Alpine, Calif., nephew and niece, Mark Maris Jones and wife Mary Kay of Tucson, Ariz., and Connie Jones Pillsbury and husband Norman of Atascadero, and four grandnieces and nephews.
Emily's family thanks the kind staff at The Village at Sydney Creek for its wonderful care of "Aunt Emy" through the last five years of her life. Emily will be laid to rest in San Jacinto Valley Cemetery in Hemet, Calif., next to her devoted sister Barbara.
