Notes for Asahel Jr. LUKENS
Asahel Lukens was one of at least five children born to Asahel N. and Susanna (Mace) Lukens. He was born on April 18, 1833 in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., PA. His twin sister was named Susan. Other children included Maria, John, and Henry H. According to the 1830 Census there were probably other older children, and according to the Dodge Co. Wisconsin historians there were probably more children to a second marriage there, perhaps ten in all. In any event, Asahel’s mother died around 1842 near Coatsville in Montgomery Co. After this, his father packed up an ox-drawn covered wagon and moved west to Wisconsin with his children. There he became one of the first settlers of Maysville, eventually selling the water rights to the founders of the town. Asahel’s sister Maria married George Bouton of the Maysville area and his twin sister Susan married Eldridge Smith. Henry H. served in the Civil War and later settled in Wisconsin and Minnesota, marrying twice. John moved farther west to California. Asahel N. remarried in Wisconsin to a Sara, but died in 1856 at 52 years. It was after this that the younger Asahel moved back to Pennsylvania where he met Priscilla Trego.
Priscilla Trego was the daughter of Jeremiah and Abigail Trego, born May 23, 1834 in Millersburg, Dauphin Co., PA. Her father was a descendent of Peter Trego, one of the Pennsylvania colonists with William Penn. He died shortly after Priscilla’s birth and her mother remarried a George O’Niell, having two children George and Elizabeth.
Asahel and Priscilla were married on Feb.3, 1858 in Benvenue, a small island just north of Duncannon, PA on the Susquehanna River. The house in which he was married was the same one in which he later died. He took up the hazardous profession of a rafts man on the river until late in life, and always loved the river and its environs. His occupation listed on his death certificate was carpenter and laborer. They attended the United Brethren Church.

Asahel and Priscilla raised a family of seven on the island – five boys and two girls. Harry was the oldest, marrying Jane Drees of Benvenue and operating a river coal business at Benvenue. Susan married Samuel Garman and continued to live in the area. George married Iva Sunday and after her death married Iva Pee, also living in Benvenue. Margaret married Albert Willi and moved to Elkhart, IN. John married Ella Sawyer and eventually moved to Williamsport. Joseph and Eugene both died as infants.
In their older years, Priscilla suffered greatly from rheumatism and was confined to a wheelchair. Asahel maintained relatively good health, but died from a stroke at age 80 in 1913, having organic heart disease. Priscilla died in 1919 at age 84. Both are buried in Duncannon at the Presbyterian Cemetery.
