Notes for Charles Edward HANKIN

Charles E. Hankin, 62, Master of Fine Arts, a third great- grandson of Edward Hicks, Bucks County Folk Artist, died Sept. 13, 2010 at his home in Montgomery Township. He had former residences in Gwynedd Valley, Philadelphia, Harleysville, Ambler and Brooklyn, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Margavitch) Hankin in 1984.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William Henry Hankin Sr. and Martha Willets (Parry) Hankin. After graduating from Wissahickon High School in 1966 he received his BFA in Sculpture from the University of the Arts in 1975. He continued his education at the New York Academy of Art receiving his Master of Fine Arts in 1992.
Mr. Hankin, a dedicated and life long artist, worked primarily in sculpture, painting and woodworking. Notable projects include the Peaceable Kingdom mural in tribute to Edward Hicks at 10th and Clearfield Streets, commissions for the William Penn Inn, and the seascape mural at North Wales Elementary School. Mr. Hankin was a model and assisted in the casting and installation of Walter Erlebacher’s 1976 “Jesus Breaking Bread” sculpture currently at Cathedral-Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, Philadelphia. Mr. Hankin’s work was exhibited at Woodmere Art Museum, The Moore Gallery and others. Mr. Hankin also authored the “Working Sculptor” blog. He was president of The Philadelphia Arts Equity Chapter from 1995-2002.
Mr. Hankin was a member of Plymouth Meeting of Religious Society of Friends and had formerly attended Gwynedd Friends Meeting.
He enjoyed movies at the Ritz, cycling, camping, hiking, canoeing, folk music, tennis, sports cars, and travel.
Surviving is his long time partner, Judy Ringold; a son, Edward E. Hankin and his wife, Shawna L. Braxtan-Hankin, and their children, Mary McKenna, Alexis Elaine and Taylor Fay of Thornton, CO; his brother, William H. Hankin Jr. and sister-in-law, Joanne, of Ocean City, NJ; his sister, Nancy E. Hankin of Manitou Springs, CO; and the legacy of his art.
