Deceased Name: MARTHA PARRY HANKIN, 68, A CIVIC VOLUNTEER
Martha Parry Hankin, 68, who worked as a volunteer in civic programs, died Sunday at Chestnut Hill Hospital. A resident of Lower Gwynedd Township and of Lansdale, she lived at Foulkways at Gwynedd, a retirement community.
Raised in Jenkintown, she was a graduate of Ambler High School and the Bessy V. Hicks School of Dramatic Arts. She played leading roles with Plays & Players in Philadelphia and Atlantic City before World War II.
After the death in 1957 of her husband, William Henry Hankin Sr., a retired Army major, she returned to school and earned a degree in English at Beaver
College. She went on to teach at Potter Elementary School in the Fairhill section of the city.
Active in politics since she was old enough to vote, she served as a Democratic committeewoman in Lower Gwynedd Township during the 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Hankin also worked as a volunteer in bail-bond and court-watching programs sponsored by the Montgomery County office of the American Civil Liberties Union in Norristown.
She also worked at the Wissahickon Valley and Whitpain branch libraries of the Montgomery County library system and was particularly active in their outreach programs.
An active member of Gwynedd Friends Meeting, Mrs. Hankin was former clerk of the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting and clerk of the Abington Quarterly Meeting of Friends.
Interested in conservation and the arts, she was also active in the work of the Sierra Club, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Zoological Society and the Lower Gwynedd chapter of the NAACP.
Surviving are her sons, Charles E. and Dr. William Hankin Jr.; daughter, Nancy E.; two grandchildren; a brother, and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gwynedd Friends Meeting, Route 202 and Sumneytown Pike.
