Joseph Jones was born 20 February 1787 in Petersburg. He studied medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and became a doctor. He married first Sarah Bland Atkinson, and second, Mary Pickett of Kentucky. Joseph Jones moved west, dying in New Orleans, Louisiana, 29 August 1847.
