Notes for Richard Gilpin Wood ANDERSON
Richard Gilpin Wood Richard Gilpin Wood Anderson completed his earthly journey on Saturday, March 19, 2011 in Portland, Oregon surrounded by the love of his family. His life was filled with family, friends, nature and his scientific career. For all who knew him he set a strong example of living life to its fullest in spite of the cancer which cut his time short. He was born in Bryn Mawr, PA on March 25, 1940 to William M. Anderson, Jr. and Helen Elise Wood. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Forsythe Anderson, daughter Amber Ann Anderson, grandson Matthew James Hegler and his two brothers Dr. William M. Anderson III, wife Dorothy K. Anderson, and Charles C. Anderson and wife Janice K. Anderson in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Heidi Hampton Anderson. After his service in the Army, Richard graduated in 1965 from Oregon State University with a degree in mathematics and in 1970 received his doctorate in anatomy from the University of Oregon Medical School. After a three year post doctoral at the Oregon Regional Primate Center he joined the faculty of the UT Southwestern Medical Center. There he had an illustrious 37 year career devoted to teaching and research. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Cell Biology from 1999 until his health forced him to step down in the fall of 2010. His scientific publications and accomplishments were extensive, including being part of the team that won the 1985 Noble Prize in Medicine. He was passionate about his scientific research, but his family was foremost in his life. He enjoyed nothing more than to spend time with them, especially if it was sharing his zeal for the out of doors. His outdoor adventures were as extensive and cutting edge as his research. He embodied the concept of exploration in every facet of his life. A celebration of his life will be held in the Faculty Club of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at 4:30 pm Sunday, April 10th. Donations may be made to Heidi H. Anderson Early Childhood Education Fund through the Oregon Community Foundation.
