Notes for Dorothy Anne TALL

Anne Tall Evans aged 91, died peacefully in her sleep at Foulkeways, Gwynedd, PA on October 25, 2012. Wife and best friend of Joseph Morris Evans (Morrie), they shared 68 years of marriage, five children, sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Anne was born on February 16, 1921 in Germantown, PA, and was the oldest of three children of George W. Tall, Jr. and Edith Beck Tall. She was predeceased by her brother George W. Tall III and her sister Margaret Tall Zimmerman Woodward. Anne attended Greene Street Friends School (class of '35), Germantown Friends School (class of '39), where she met Morrie, and Vassar College, graduating in 1943 with a BA in Music (piano). Anne and Morrie were married on January 8, 1944. They spent their first years of married life working on a farm in Washington, CT to fulfill Morrie's alternate service requirement during World War II. "Life was not easy. We got along with very little and had few nearby neighbors. Not many people were in sympathy with our pacifist views. But depending so completely on one another was a very special experience that today's young seldom know". After the war, Morrie and Anne first settled in Glenside, then Wyncote, PA. They raised five children upon whom Anne showered attention and love. She really loved children! She managed a large household, read patiently at bedtime, carpooled, watched hundreds of her children's and grandchildren's sporting and musical events happily, encouraged music lessons, hosted countless meals, taught Sunday School at Germantown Friends Meeting, and volunteered in the Philadelphia Public Schools. Anne also loved to garden, knit, and quilt; but she especially loved to play golf, "one of my real pleasures - and releases". She was very good at it, having played for 66 years and shooting two holes-in-one! In the 1970's the grandchildren began arriving, at the rate of about one a year. Anne was as busy as she was thrilled to be a grandparent. Morrie and Anne moved to Gwynedd, PA in 1979 and lived there for 21 years, before moving to Foulkeways at Gwynedd. Anne was active in First Day School and served as an Overseer at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. Her independent spirit, love of jokes and humor always managed to lighten any occasion and her family has many wonderful and funny stories to remember her by. In 1984, Anne wrote A Tall Tale, a book of her family history, amusing stories and memories. Her family will especially remember our happy summers spent at the house at Brant Beach, NJ, where she enjoyed being near the ocean and in the sun with her loved ones. Anne will be deeply missed by her husband, Morrie, her children: Joseph (Carolyn), Walter (Jane), Wendy (Mark), Laura (Steve), Peter (Ellen), as well as her grandchildren: Elizabeth Rylander (Jason), Ben Evans (Naomi), Susan Evans (Steve), Alison Cooper (Ed), Megan Kafer (Ryan), Andrew Evans (Katherine), Jennifer Kravitz (Erik Remsen), Lindsey Kravitz (Eric Olson), Evan Kravitz, Brian Durant (Brigid), Claire Durant, Jacqueline Durant, Michael Durant, Paul Evans, Kyle Evans, and James Evans. Her legacy of comfort and love will live on through her great grandchildren: Lauren Rylander, Patrick Rylander, Maia Kafer, Eleanor Kafer, Emlen Cooper, Nina Cooper, Carter Olson, Sydney Olson, and Kaisa Remsen. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Germantown Friends School, Advancement Office, 31 W Coulter St, Philadelphia, PA 19144. A memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family.
