Accountant, activist, 88

David Cope Elkinton, 88, of Newtown Square, a retired accountant and Quaker activist, died of complications from bladder cancer July 2 at Riddle Memorial Hospital, Media.
In 1900, Mr. Elkinton's Quaker ancestors helped Russian pacifists establish a settlement in Canada. His own Quaker activities included lifetime membership in Media Monthly Meeting, where he served on several committees, and participation in the Philadelphia Friends Yearly Meeting and the Friends General Conference. In 1967 he was treasurer of the Friends World Conference.
He was a graduate of Westtown School and earned a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in 1936.
In 1940 he married Marian Dunham. The couple met while working together for the American Youth Hostels in Massachusetts.
For 35 years, Mr. Elkinton was an accountant for his family's firm, Philadelphia Quartz Co., now PQ Corp., and he set up the firm's electronic data processing system. He retired in 1978.
A longtime resident of Moylan, he was a former Democratic committeeman in Upper Providence. In the 1950s and 1960s he had leading roles in plays produced by the Swarthmore Players Club.
In 1989, he and his wife were among the first residents of White Horse Village, a retirement community in Newtown Square. He became the community's photographer and archivist.
He enjoyed traveling abroad and also traveled around the United States with a camping trailer he designed and later in an RV.
His interest in genealogy resulted in his publishing a four-volume family history.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Thomas, David and Steven; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Media Meeting House. Burial was private.
