Notes for Thomas WARD

Thomas Ward and Phebe Mercer eloped and were married in St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, PA. They were "disowned" by the Quaker congregation and never sought reinstatement. The quote from the Men's Minutes, 1768-78, p.84, dated December 1770: "Grove Meeting informs that Thomas Ward hath been guilty of Clandestinely Accomplishing his Marriage by the Assistance of a Priest to a Friends Child Notwithstanding her Parents dislike and Endeavors to prevent it."

In an 1886 letter written by a Mercer/Ward descendant: "I know that old Thomas Ward, who would marry Phebe with a 'priest' instead of in regular order in Friends Meeting was a stubborn, contrary, queer old coot. Some of his children inherited much of it, too."

Thomas owned a grist mill and saw mill in Chester Co, West Nottingham Twp.

Thomas served in the PA Militia during the Revolutionary War. He is listed under "Associators and Militia" of the 2nd Btn., London Grove Company, 1778.
