Notes for John E. Jr. NEWLIN

John E. Newlin, 77, of Thorndale, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010, after a brief stay at Hickory House of Honey Brook.
He was the husband of Lulu Baker Newlin, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
John was the son of the late John E. Newlin Sr. and Mary Labiak Newlin.
John lived in the Coatesville area all his life and attended Coatesville schools.
Early in his career John operated three gas stations in Honey Brook, Coatesville and Gap.
He was service manager at Morelli Hoskins Ford in the 1960s, and owned Newlin Brothers Auto Service in Coatesville for 20 years with his brother, Robert.
John then worked for Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Del., and retired from there in 1997.
An avid hunter and fisherman his entire life, John had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed camping, snowmobiling and spending time at a mountain home in Potter County, a hunting camp in Bedford County and a Doe Run farm.
John built and raced modified stock cars over the years at the Reading Fairground and other area raceways.
John held a private pilot license and was rated to fly single-engine planes. He owned and flew Piper Cub and Cessna airplanes, and home-built several planes. John also enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes.
He restored antique and classic cars, and was a longtime member of the Chester County Antique Car Club. He planned and directed car club runs to area nursing and retirement homes and frequently entered his automobiles in car shows.
John was a life member of the Washington Hose Company No. 1 in Coatesville.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters, Barbara Newlin-Landis (wife of Richard J. Landis) and Brenda Newlin Rash; four grandchildren, Renee, Rachel, Michael and Andrew; brother, Robert Newlin of Quarryville; sister, Delores Melnick of Coatesville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Terri Lu Newlin.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life at a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Thorndale United Methodist Church, 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale, PA 19372.
