Dr. Bartram published widely on the prevention and treatment of cerebral palsy, was medical consultant for United Cerebral Palsy in Pennsylvania, and traveled around the state, visiting clinics and helping to establish medical standards for cerebral palsy services.
Dr. Bartram was a professor in the Temple medical school's department of pediatrics from 1941 to 1977.
He served as a consultant to many regional, state, and national organizations and institutions helping handicapped children.
"He was an incredibly compassionate individual who had a great many skills," said David Smith, a friend, colleague, and former head of general pediatrics at St. Christopher's and retired acting chairman of the department of pediatrics at Temple's School of Medicine.
"He was a great teacher and a very modest individual who had a deep concern for handicapped children," Smith said.
He was a member of and the former president of the John Bartram Association, which helps to maintain the Bartram's Garden, the oldest botanical garden in North America, at 54th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia.
He also founded a clinic and paved the way for the formal education for handicapped children in Schuylkill County.
Dr. Bartram was a member of numerous organizations and was active with the Historical Society of Schuylkill County, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, and the Child Psychiatry Center at St. Christopher's.
