Notes for Viola BELL

Kingman Journal:
County Pioneer Dies in Kingman Hospital - Viola Bell was born June 8, 1861 near Chandlerville, Ill., and departed this life May 22 at the Kingman Memorial Hospital. Had she lived until June 8, she would have been 84 years old. When she was 11 years old, the family came to Kansas by covered wagon, to join the father, who had come a year earlier and homesteaded near the site of Moundridge. They lived in their sod house with a fair degree of comfort, but there were many hardships to endure. In 1879, she was united in marriage with Abraham Showalter of Moundridge. In 1884 they moved to Kingman County, first living near Murdock. In 1892, they got a farm in Eagle Township, where they lived until 1909, when they moved to Belmont. After Mr. Showalter's death in 1927, she bought a home in Kingman, where she lived until five years ago, when she returned to Belmont. Many years ago she was united with the Baptist church, later transferring her membership to the Christian church. Four children preceded her in death. The three who survive are Albert of Kingman; Mrs. Myrtle Starr of Belmont and Mrs. Audie Smith of Kansas City. Besides her immediate family she leaves six grandchildren, three of whom are in the service; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Fulghum of Fredonia and Mrs. Della Ott of Hutchinson; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Mrs. Showalter Buried Yesterday. Pioneer Mother Dies Tuesday Morning at 84 Years of Age. Mrs. Viola Showalter, 84, widow of the late A. L. Showalter and one of the esteemed mothers of Kingman county for sixty years, died at Memorial hospital at 1 o'clock Tuesday morning, May 22. She had been in poor health for some time and been in the hospital five weeks. She fell and broke her hip a short time ago. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Belmont yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, with Rev. R. A. Potter officiating. The Livingston mortuary was in charge. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Bell, Mrs. Showalter was born at Chandlerville, Ill, June 8, 1861. When she was ten years old the family came to Kansas and settled in McPherson county. She grew to womanhood there and was married to A. L. Showalter July 31, 1879. Mr. and Mrs. Showalter came to Kingman county in 1884 and she had lived in Belmont and vicinity and in Kingman since that time. Mr. Showalter, who was county commissioner at one time, died eighteen years ago. During her long residence in Kingman county, Mrs. Showalter was revered by old and young alike. She grew old gracefully and never lost her kind, neighborly spirit which she learned in her early-day life in Kansas. She had been a member of the Methodist church for many years. Surviving are three children, Mrs. W.J. Starr of Belmont, W.A. Showalter of Kingman, and Mrs. Audie Smith of Kansas City. Three children died in infancy.
