Notes for Joseph J. HUDOME
Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - March 31, 2005
Deceased Name: Joseph Hudome, decorated WWII vet
JOSEPH J. "Bud" Hudome had a wonderful attitude about life. He never sweated the small stuff, his glass was always half full, not half empty, and you never saw him without a smile on his face.
Hudome was a decorated World War II Marine veteran, participating in four invasions in the Pacific as American forces battled their way toward Japan.
He saw a lot of carnage and lost a lot of friends, but he never despaired. He saw life and the world as a thing of beauty, his daughter, Joanne Holsten, said.
"He was a very unique man," she said. "He was always there to pick you up if you were sad. All his friends would tell you he just had a beautiful attitude about life."
Hudome, a retired employee of the Delaware County district attorney's office, died Saturday of complications from a fall. He was 83 and lived in Bromall for 45 years.
Born in West Philadelphia, he graduated from West Catholic High School and then enlisted in the service.
He served with the 4th Marine Division in the South Pacific, was awarded a Silver Star for valor, a Purple Heart and other decorations for his service in the invasions of Rio-Namur, Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima.
"He was very much a hero and was the first to volunteer for everything," his daughter said. "He never talked about it when he was younger, but he did in his later years. It was very important to him."
He told his family that it was very difficult on the islands and when they landed on Iwo Jima they were like sitting ducks waiting to be killed.
"A lot of his friends died and he often wondered why he survived," she said.
After the war, he graduated from St. Joseph's University and started a career in sales.
He sold tractor-trailers for several years and then took an office job with the D.A. in the Delaware County Courthouse. He retired 13 years ago.
In his retirement years, his favorite pastime was rooting for the St. Joe's Hawks and attending plays, concerts and the sporting events of his grandchildren.
"He lived to watch those St. Joe's games," his daughter said. "He always had on his St. Joe's Hawks hat and he was a fabulous grandfather who never missed anything the kids did."
He also is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy M.; another daughter, Carol J. Dow; a brother, Donald; a sister, Kathleen Magee, and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 N. Providence Road, Media. Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.
