Hillborn Darlington Jr., a native of Doylestown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Doylestown Hospital after losing a hard-fought battle with pneumonia. He was 94.
He was the devoted husband of Mary Ann Patterson Darlington.
Hillborn was the son of the late Grace Bigley Darlington and Hillborn Darlington Sr.
He graduated from Doylestown High School, Class of 1933, and attended Drexel University, majoring in mechanical engineering.
He was a third generation florist in Doylestown, and the owner of Darlington Greenhouses. In July 1965, he sold the florist business to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia which built the present-day Mount Carmel Church and parking lot on the site. He was a member of the Florist Club of Philadelphia, and the Mid-Atlantic Carnation Growers. In September 1965, he began employment with Doylestown Hospital in the storeroom, and retired in February 1987. After retirement, he volunteered at Doylestown Hospital until the summer of 2000.
During his lifetime, he traveled extensively to more than 40 countries and 49 states. He participated in Doylestown Borough Centennial Celebration of 1938 riding a three-wheeler high bicycle, and in the Sesquicentennial Celebration of 1988.
Hillborn was the oldest living Boy Scout in Bucks County and actively participated in scouting for 28 years as a troop leader, assistant scout master, scout master for six years, neighborhood commissioner, district commissioner and a key scout master.
He was a 58 year member of Doylestown Rotary Club and served as president in 1965-66 and as secretary for eight years. He was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Hillborn enjoyed being a Freemason, having joined Doylestown Masonic Lodge on June 11, 1943. He was Mason of the Year in 1999. He joined Chapter in October 1943 and was a past high priest. He joined Commandery in January 1944 and served as a past commander in 1948 and 1951. He was a member of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. He joined Council in 1948 and was its past thrice illustrious master and received the Order of the Silver Trowel. He was a 32nd degree Mason at the Lehigh Consistory in Allentown, having joined in May 1971. He was active in High 12, the Aircraft Square Club, the Wolcott Foundation in May 1999, Knight Masons, Tyler for School of Instruction, and Mary Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, from 1995 to the present.
A lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ, Hillborn was a former trustee and deacon. His maternal grandparents were among the founders of Salem Church.
Hillborn was a former member of the Doyiapo Indian Club of Doylestown and also a former member of the Order of Red Men.
He was a lifelong Republican who was inducted into the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame in May 1997, having been a Pennsylvania registered voter who had voted in every general election for 50 or more consecutive years.
In addition to his wife, Hillborn is survived by three nieces, Katharine Feinberg of Lexington, Ky., Janet Darlington of Bethesda, Md., and Nancy Paul of Wallingford, Pa.; one nephew, David Darlington of Wernersville, Pa.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Katharine Darlington, formerly of Doylestown; and a brother, E. Dillwyn Darlington Esq., formerly of Feasterville.
Family members will greet friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Shelly Funeral Home, Easton and Keller's Church roads, Plumsteadville, and at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Salem UCC Church, 186 E. Court St., Doylestown, PA 18901, where his service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be held immediately thereafter at Doylestown Cemetery.
