Menander M. Wood. One of the most prominent residents of Avondale, of softening of the brain, with which he has been afflicted for several months. He was about seventy-five years old snd was a carpenter by trade. He was a contractor for several years and had built many of the large bridges in the county. (Obituary from the Patriot newspaper July 6, 1897)

Erected the woodwork of the Newcomer's Bridge - Chester county bridge no.12 about 1 mile northeast of the Bellbank Bridge. Menander was assisted by his brothers, Alfred and Ferdinand.

Menander owned a 107 acre farm just west of Avondale from 1870 until the late 1890's. In addition to his farm he operated a lumber yard in Avondale. This was an asset in his bridge building business. In his home in Avondale was a collection of oil paintings of merit which he purchased a few years before his death from the artist.

In 1881 it appears that Menander Wood , with the help of two of his brothers built a second bridge here (Garrett's Bridge - WIllistown Twp). This bridge had a 58 foot span and a 14 foot roadway. In later years it was known as County Bridge No. 154.

Hayes Clark Bridge - The woodwork was done by Menander Wood at $1,362.

Laurel Bridge - It appears that the Laurel Bridge was built in 1876 with Menander Wood doung the woodwork at $1,175...

Mortonville Bridge - In addition, Ferdinand Wood bid $2860 to do both the wood and stonework. His Brother Menander Wood bid $2600 for the same work. County bridge records show that Menander Wood did the woodwork...

Pocopson Creek Bridge Another record gives this date as 1872 and notes that Menander Wood was paid $139 for putting a new roof on the Pocopson Creek bridge in 1877. The great flood of June 1884 did such damage that a contract to rebuild it at $600 was awarded to Menaande Wood. The smallness of this figure suggests that Menander was able to reuse much of the material of the former bridge.

Pleasant Garden - Forge Bridge - It had to be rebuilt after the 1884 flood. At this time the Pleasant Garden Bridge , now known as County Bridge No 27, was rebuilt by Menander Wood for $1,638.

Rudolph and Arthur Bridge - Menander Wood built the woodwork at $1,440...

Richardson's-Ferguson's bridge - In 1843 John M. Wood and his younger brother Menander built the bridge under discussion.

Glen Hope Bridge - Of this figure, Menander Wood was paid $994 for the woodwork....

Pine Grove Bridges - In 1881 Menander Wood and Ferdinand Wood were paid $1,444 for repairing this bridge.
