Notes for Elwood T. STEEL
Elwood T. Steel, 90, of New London, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Jenner's Pond, West Grove.
He was the husband of Eleanor Pierson Steel, who preceded him in death in 1972, and Anna Waltman Steel who passed away in 2006.
A lifelong resident of southern Chester County, he was born in London Grove, the son of the late Elwood and Elizabeth Steel.
He served in World War II, as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps in the 319th Bomb Squad also known as the Jolly Rogers Bomb Squad. He was stationed throughout the South Pacific and Australia during his tour.
Until his retirement in 1989, he was employed by Road Machinery Inc. of Lionville as a heavy equipment mechanic.
He is survived by a brother, Chandler Steel of Avondale, a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Sorenson of Eagle; two sons, Roger T. Steel and his fiancéee Sharon Holleman of Midway, N.C., and Richard A. Steel and his wife, Mary Anne of New London; his grandchildren, Brian Thomas Steel of Houston, Texas, Jacob Roger Steel of Abingdon, Va., and Rebecca Lynne Steel of Marion, Va., mother of Brian and Jake; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his wives, he was predeceased by brothers, George Steel, Herbert Steel and sisters, Blanche Steel and Louise Coates.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at Cleveland & Grieco Funeral Home, 221-223 Pennsylvania Ave., Avondale, 610-268-2166, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, followed by his funeral service at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery, 4 Westtown Road, Thornton.
