Notes for Bradshaw SNIPES

Bradshaw Snipes, 86, of Kennett Square, Pa. died of heart failure on May 28, 2008.
A 9th generation Quaker and nurseryman, Bradshaw dedicated his life to promoting peace and horticulture. He grew up on Snipes Farm on Route 1 in Morrisville, Bucks County, Pa. He attended Fallsington School and graduated from George School, BA Guilford College and MA Haverford College. After teaching at George School for four years, he revived a farm and nursery started by his great grandfather in 1849, which developed into Snipes Farm & Nursery and the Morrisville Golf Farm. As president of the Pennsylvania Nursery and Landscape Association, he launched a national Fall is For Planting campaign and the development of the garden center style of marketing plants for homeowners. He was also named PA Nurseryman of the Year. His interests in peace made him a conscientious objector to war in WW II. He served in the Civilian Public Service and U.S. Forest Service as a smokejumper. After the war he worked on humanitarian relief efforts in Europe. He made four trips on cattle boats to Poland with shiploads of horses and cattle to replenish stocks destroyed in the war. He then served with the American Friends Service Committee in Finland and Germany in war reconstruction projects before finishing his education.
He was elected to two terms of the Pennsbury School Board and served as its president. He was active in the Philadelphia Horticulural Society and exhibited in the Philadelphia Flower Show for 18 years. He served on the Board of directors of the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service and was active in the Bucks County Christmas Tree Association. He traveled extensively, visiting Russia in 1971 as part of a Promoting Enduring Peace program. He lived the last three years in Crosslands, Kennett Square, Pa. where he enjoyed gardening and sharing his enthusiasm for horticulture with others.
The son of Edgar T. and Jane Moon Snipes, he is survived by his wife, Ingeborg, four children: Hannah Snipes Hogan of Jim Thorpe, Pa., Amy Snipes-McKamey of Bordentown, N.J., Daniel M. Snipes of The Netherlands and Anne Snipes Moss of Doe Run, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; and a brother, Samuel M. Snipes of Morrisville, Pa.
