Deceased Name: Alfred R. Hunter Jr. Squash champion, 81
Alfred Reeves Hunter Jr., 81, of Haverford, a retired stockbroker and seniors squash champion, died of Lewy body disease, a neurological disorder, Dec. 27 at Beaumont, a retirement community in Bryn Mawr.
Mr. Hunter and partner Darwin Kingsley 3d won the U.S. National Senior Squash Doubles Championship in 1979 and 1980. The men won the Canadian title in 1979. Mr. Hunter also held the Philadelphia 55-and-over Squash Singles title in 1984. In 1993, he was ranked second in the United States for men 65 and over. He didn't start playing squash until he was 33, his daughter Rosalee said.
Mr. Hunter also won medals in Masters Track Meets, and played for teams in the Philadelphia Inter Club Softball League for 46 years.
A native of Chestnut Hill, Mr. Hunter served in the Marine Corps in China during World War II.
After his discharge, he received a bachelor's degree from Yale University. He worked for Fidelity Bank, and then pursued a career as a stockbroker with Rorer Asset Management and later with Cresap Inc. in Radnor. He retired in 2004.
In addition to daughter Rosalee, Mr. Hunter is survived by daughters Elizabeth and Sarah; a son, James; four stepchildren; a sister; three grandchildren; and his former wives Jolly Walton Stewart and Ann Hunter. His wife of 25 years, Barbara Strobahr Hunter, died in 1994.
