Notes for Wilfrid MURTLAND
Wilfrid Murtland was born in 1900 to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Murtland. He graduated from Princeton University in 1922 and by 1942 had established in Pittsburgh achieving the level of vice president in the Pittsburgh-Peoples Trust Company. At the age of 42 he enlisted in the army and was immediately commissioned first lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. He underwent training in both California and Florida where he graduated from fighter command school as an aircraft controller on October 17, 1942. In February of 1943, Murtland arrived in the North African theatre as a member of the 64th Fighter Wing. During the more than three years of his active duty, Murtland would see action in eight campaigns: Africa, Sicily, Naples- Foggia, Rome- Arno, Southern France, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He would also participate in the D- Day landing South of Anzio in 1943. The acknowledgement that he received in these conflicts included a purple heart awarded near Salerno in October of 1943 and the Bronze Star "for meritorious service in direct support of combat operations" in February of 1945. He was also commended in the name of President Eisenhower for his action in Italy in the fall of 1943. After the war Murtland left the army having attained the rank of Major. Returning to Pittsburgh he would resume his profession becoming a senior vice president for the Pittsburgh National Bank. Wilfrid Murtland died on January 21, 1975 at his home in Pittsburgh.
