Notes for Norton III DOWNS
Norton Downs, 66, a professor at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., an author and editor of numerous works on medieval history and an authority on Sir Walter Scott, died Friday in Hartford. Mr. Downs, who had been at Trinity since 1950, served as the treasurer of the Medieval Academy of America.
A native of Philadelphia, he was a leading authority on the 19th century and the novelist Sir Walter Scott, and in 1979 gave Trinity his impressive collection of Scott's letters, papers and first editions.
Mr. Downs earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and attained the rank of lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942 until 1946.
A longtime resident of Canton Center, he was a member of the Canton Land Trust and the Democratic Town Committee.
Survivors: wife, Marguerite Lindsay Downs; three children, N. Thompson, Lindsay and Alice; mother, Mrs. Edward Madeira; a half-brother, Edward Madeira Jr., and three grandchildren.
