Notes for Benton Harrison Jr. WOODWARD
Benton H. "Buzz" Woodward Jr., 79, of South Coatesville, died on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at his farm, which has been in the family since 1850.
Buzz was the husband of Mary Brown Woodward, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage on Oct. 10.
Born at the family home, he was the son of the late Benton H. and Jessie Coulter Woodward Sr.
Buzz graduated in 1948 from S. Horace Scott Senior High School.
He worked on the family dairy farm and started an auto repair shop. In 1965, he started Woodward's Towing, which he operated until his death.
Buzz's passion was auto racing and he was a member of the NASCAR Racing Association and the Pen-Mar Racing Club. He built and competed in his own car in 13 Sprint Cup Series events during his career, earning five top-10s.
Woodward's debut came during the 1956 season, when he competed at Langhorne. Starting 19th in the field of 41, he emerged with a 16th-place finish. He had a solo appearance during the 1957 season at Syracuse, starting 17th out of 24; he wound up eighth. During the nine-race schedule of the 1958 season, he finished 40th in the year-end standings. After finishing 24th during his season opener at Daytona Beach, he finished no worse than 16th during the rest of the year and only had one DNF. During his one race of the 1959 season in a field of 25 at Reading, he finished with a career-best fifth place. His final career race in 1961 at Norwood earned him a seventh-place showing.
Buzz was a former member of the Coatesville Presbyterian Church, a member of the Doe Run Presbyterian Church, and a life member of Modena and Washington fire companies.
In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling with his family.
Surviving him, in addition to his wife, Mary, is a daughter, Rebecca Jane Woodward; a stepson, Emidio Tranquillo; a sister, Jean Herr; two granddaughters, Tiffany Meece and Kimberly Hulse; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Harry Johnston.
He was preceded in death by his son, Benton H. Woodward III; two brothers; and a sister.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, at the Harris-Mountain Funeral Home, 1030 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
In his memory, contributions may be made to the Chester County Association for the Blind.
