Charles P. Barnard, 83, of Devon, an insurance and real estate agency owner and a Quaker, died of pneumonia April 13 at Paoli Hospital.
Mr. Barnard was born to Quaker parents on a farm in Unionville. He graduated from Unionville High School. After his marriage to Isabel Downing Barnard in 1950, he became involved in the ministry of the Society of Friends. An inspiring speaker, he often spoke during worship at Marlborough Friends Meeting in Kennett Square, where he was a member. He also was invited to speak at meetings in Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and in North Carolina.
Mr. Barnard was a member of the Friends Tract Association, which distributes Quaker literature. For 25 years, he was president of the Bible Association of Friends in America.
For 20 years, he owned C.P. Barnard Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Berwyn. He was past president of the Devon-Berwyn Business Association.
After selling his agency in the late 1980s, he wanted to stay busy, his wife said, and he delivered flowers for Adelbergers Florist in Wayne for 10 years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Barnard is survived by his brothers Richard and Samuel; three nieces and four nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 30 at Marlborough Friends Meeting, 361 Marlboro Rd., Kennett Square.
