Notes for Carlota HERKNESS
Carlota (Herkness) Geyer, 87, of Stamford, CT, died peacefully in her sleep on August 1, 2012. Carlota was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1925, to Lindsay Coates and Carlota (nee LaLanne) Herkness. She graduated from Westover School, Goucher College, and earned a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College (NYC). She went on to teach generations of preschool children and was a mentor to countless young parents. She married John Geyer in 1948 and they raised five children in Greenwich and Darien, CT. Carlota was a generous volunteer and an accomplished horsewoman, tennis player, and sailor. She and her family were extraordinarily proud that she was named the first female Flag Officer at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT. For the past two decades, Carlota had been living by the water she loved, the Long Island Sound, in Stamford, CT, in the company of photographer Don Beatty. She was predeceased by her husband John R. Geyer and her brother Lindsay C. Herkness of Philadelphia, PA. She leaves behind Don Beatty of Bozeman, MT, her brother Wayne Herkness of Lewisburg, WV, five children Carlota Schechter of Salisbury, CT, Arlin Geyer of Asheville, NC, Nancy Geyer of Boulder, CO, W. Rockwell Geyer of Falmouth, MA, and Mary D. Geyer of Santa Cruz, CA, and her faithful dog Riley. She also leaves eight devoted grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 17th at 11 a.m. at Christ Church in Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Carlota Geyer Preschool Scholarship Fund at The Long Ridge School. 478 Erskine Road, Stamford, CT 06903.
