Notes for Edwin Owen LEWIS
Edwin Lewis earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania and was admitted to the bar in 1902. He served on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas bench for some 34 years, retiring in 1957. He was then associated with the law firm of Norris, Lex, Hart & Ross. A direct descendant of Virginia colonists who owned plantations for more than 250 years, Lewis was a prime mover in the creation of Independence Mall and Independence National Historical Park. In 1942, he formed the Independence Hall Association and spent much of his life pushing for state and federal funds to restore the area surrounding Independence Hall. The Lewis Quadrangle and Fountain at Independence Mall in Philadelphia are named in his honor.
