Notes for Richard Evelyn III BYRD

Richard E. Byrd Jr., son of the polar explorer, died of natural causes Monday in Baltimore. He was 68 and lived on Beacon Hill.
Mr. Byrd devoted most of his adult life to his father's legacy as custodian of his father's papers and served as a trustee of the Adm. Richard E. Byrd Foundation.
Admiral Byrd, who was born in 1888, and Floyd Bennett in 1926 were the first to fly over the North Pole. The admiral is best known for the five expeditions he led to Antartica between 1930 and 1956. He died in 1957.
The Byrd Foundation made possible the creation of the Byrd Polar Rersearch Center at Ohio State University.
Richard Byrd Jr. was born in Boston and graduated from Milton Academy in 1938 and from Harvard College in 1942. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Union Boat Club and the Somerset Club, both of Boston.
Mr. Bryd leaves four sons, Richard E. 3d and Harry of Brookline, Leverett of Needham and Ames of Norwich, Vt.; two sisters, Katherine Breyer of Los Angeles and Bolling Clarke of Media, Pa., and six grandchildren.
