Notes for Donald L. GIBSON
Donald “Hoot” L. Gibson, 79, of Lansdale, formerly of Green Lane and Pennsburg, was called to the Lord on June 25, 2009, in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Bernice E. (Peters) Gibson; they had celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary on May 14 th.
Born in Quakertown he was a son of the late Lawrence W. Gibson and Marian M. (Foulke) Gilbert.
He attended Pennsburg High School where he lettered in football and baseball. Leaving high school to enter the service, he earned his diploma while serving in the U.S. Army from 1946 through 1953. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Prior to his retirement in 1998, Mr. Gibson was employed by Merck and Co. as a supervisor in Site Services. He was a member of St. John’s U.C.C. in Lansdale.
Mr. Gibson's interests included gardening, karaoke, dancing and following local high school sports games. He was also an avid sports fan of the Phillies and Eagles. He also coached Little League baseball in Quakertown and was one of the founders of Quakertown Midget Football, then called the Quakertown Dutchmen. After moving to Lansdale he coached the Cannoneers Midget Football team for seven years.
He also coached North Penn Valley Girls Softball; umpired all PIAA baseball and softball; was a football referee, District Commissioner for ASA Softball, Chief Umpire for ASA Softball, coached Cannoneers Pennettes Girls Softball, later to become Lansdale Pennettes for seven years. He also coached Lansdale Catholic Girls Softball.
Surviving with his wife are seven children: Donald L. Gibson Jr. and his wife, Rose, of Lansdale; Bonnie Posavec and her companion, Bud Moyer, of Hatfield; Barry L. Gibson and his wife, Judy, of Hatfield; Donna Gibson, East Greenville; Denise McLaurin and her husband, Michael, Sellersville; Patti Tygh and her husband, Dennis, Lansdale; Cindy Davis and her companion, Dennis Burner, Harleysville, PA; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Robert Gibson and his wife, Jeanette, Montgomery, AL and Larry Gibson and his wife, Linda, of Quakertown; two step brothers: Dennis Gibson, Sumneytown and Thomas Wireman, Sellersville; two step sisters: Barbara Bartholomew, Quakertown; and Gloria Daugherty, Ligonier, PA; many nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Forrest Peters, Richlandtown and two sisters-in-law, Valerie Burke, Hatfield and Helen Millard and her husband, John, Quakertown.
He was preceded in death by his step father, Robert Gilbert.
Friends and relatives may call at the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale, Tuesday June 30, 7 to 9 PM. The family will also receive guests on Wed. July 1, at St. John's U.C.C., 500 W. Main St., Lansdale, PA. 19446 from 10 to 11 am, followed by a celebration of life service. Interment will be at Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
