Notes for John Douglas MORAN
John Douglas Moran, 78, of Chestnut Hill, founder of a financial consulting firm bearing his name, died of mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lungs) Friday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Born in Woodbury, Gloucester County, Mr. Moran moved to Chestnut Hill as a child. He graduated from Friends Select School in 1944. That same year, he enlisted in the Navy. He was a radioman in the Philippines during World War II and was discharged in 1946.
Mr. Moran earned a bachelor's degree in 1951 from the Wharton School and a master's degree in 1955 from the University of Pennsylvania, both in economics.
Mr. Moran began his career in finance while in graduate school, working briefly for the Federal Reserve Bank. After graduating, he joined Fidelity Bank and later Industrial Valley Bank, spending about five years with each institution.
In the mid-1960s, he set up a financial consulting and venture capital firm, J.D. Moran Associates, in Chestnut Hill. He kept the office open throughout his life.
Mr. Moran married Priscilla Ann Biddle in 1961. The couple had two sons, James and Doug, before divorcing in 1984. He married Barbara McNeel, pastor of St. Peter's Tohickon United Church of Christ in Perkasie, Bucks County, in 1990. She brought two children, Rick Johnson and Susan Laskos, to the marriage.
Mr. Moran loved baseball, hockey, football and golf, and coached bridge at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
He enjoyed cooking elaborate holiday meals, and "despite his less than perfect pitch, he loved to sing along to his favorite records of 1950s Broadway musicals," said his son James.
In addition to his wife, former wife, sons and stepchildren, Mr. Moran is survived by a step-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. next Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave. Burial will be private.
