Notes for Marian KIRK
Marian Kirk Appel, 89, formerly of Radnor, a community activist who produced a local cable-TV program, died of pneumonia May 19 at the Quadrangle in Haverford.
In the 1980s Mrs. Appel produced All About Radnor. The program featured discussions with township personnel about environmental and quality-of-life concerns. In 1986 she was appointed to the Radnor Citizens Cable Communications Council; she was reappointed in 1990. The council established public-access cable channels for the school district, government, and public-service programming in Radnor Township.
Mrs. Appel was a past president of the Lower Merion League of Women Voters and the Weeders Garden Club. She served on the regional board of the Garden Club of America and on the club's conservation committee.
The daughter of a distinguished naval officer, Mrs. Appel grew up on naval bases all over the United States. Her father, Adm. Alan G. Kirk, commanded naval operations during the landings in Sicily and Normandy during World War II.
After earning a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1940, Mrs. Appel served as class president for more than 60 years and organized numerous reunions, including her 65th in 2005.
In 1941 she married John W. Appel, a psychoanalyst. The couple had met on a train on the way to a skiing party.
Mrs. Appel is survived by daughters Deborah Chomiw and Lydia Forbes; a son, Kenneth; a sister; a brother; and five grandsons. Her husband died in 2002.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 400 King of Prussia Rd., Radnor.
