Notes for Gwendolyn MONROE
Gwendolyn Monroe Clemence of Wellesley and Needham died on June 16, 2006, at North Hill Skilled Nursing Facility in Needham. She was 93.
She was the daughter of Herbert C. Monroe and Phebe Viola (Richardson) Monroe.
Mrs. Clemence was long active as an alumna of Wheaton College, Class of 1934.
She married Maurice L. Clemence on June 20, 1936.
Mrs. Clemence was locally active with Girl Scouts, Wellesley Friendly Aid, as an aide at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and as a member of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church.
A lady devoted foremost to her husband, parents and children, she was a cornerstone of courage and graciousness for them all.
Her good nature was especially present during her final illness.
Mrs. Clemence's love for music, reading and learning continues in her family through their scholarly and professional careers.
Her personal projects included genealogical research, books-on-tape, and studying Latin poetry. Her particular joy in music-making extends through her family.
Mrs. Clemence was predeceased by her husband, Maurice L. Clemence and by her daughter, Cynthia C. Dervin of Winston-Salem, N.C.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith C. Brownell of So. Dartmouth; grandchildren, Canby Dautel Jr. and his wife Rhaea, Peter B. Dautel and his wife Lisa, John E. Dervin and his fiancée Danielle Brown, Anne M. Dervin and James M. Dervin; three great-grandchildren; and sons-in-law, James A. Dervin and David A. Brownell.
