Mary Tyler Hart, 97, a champion amateur golfer, died April 22 at the Evergreens, a retirement community in Moorestown, where she had lived for 15 years.
Mrs. Hart grew up across the street from the Riverton Country Club and began playing golf there with her brothers before she was 10. She graduated from the George School in Newtown, Bucks County, and earned a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College in 1932.
The next year, she won the first of 14 women's golf championships at Riverton. She would go on to win five South Jersey Amateur Women's Golf Championships.
Mrs. Hart was a member of the women's team at Riverton for 50 years. At 21, she had a 6 handicap. When she was 79, her handicap was 16, according to a history of the club published in 2007.
She continued to golf into the 1990s. The Riverton Country Club's Mary Tyler Hart Trophy is awarded to a women's team member who wins all five matches in the Philadelphia Cup competition, which includes the top six women's teams in the Golf Association of Philadelphia.
In 1934, Mrs. Hart married Richard Lippincott, an investment adviser who was a Riverton Golf Club amateur champion. The couple raised three children in Riverton before divorcing in 1953. For several years she was married to Philip Somervell before his death. In 1981, she married J. Leslie Hart, a sales manager and former college football coach. He died in 1993.
For many years, Mrs. Hart volunteered at Cinnaminson Home and served as treasurer; the home closed in 2002. She was also a longtime volunteer at the Greenleaf Extension Home, a Quaker-run facility for the elderly in Moorestown that closed in 1997.
Mrs. Hart is survived by a son, Richard Lippincott; daughters Ann Lippincott and Eleanor Murray; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at Westfield Friends Meeting Burial Ground, 2201 Riverton Rd., Cinnaminson.
