Notes for Joan MILLIKEN

Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA) - July 9, 1985
Deceased Name: JOAN MILLIKEN STROUD, 62, MEMBER OF A PROMINENT FAMILY IN CHESCO
Joan Milliken Stroud, 62, a member of a prominent Chester County family, died Sunday at a New York City hospital. She lived at Landhope, the family farm in West Grove.
Mrs. Stroud devoted herself to her family, education, and bettering international understanding.
She and her husband, W. B. Dixon Stroud, former president and trustee of the Academy of Natural Sciences, were active environmentalists. They were the donors of the Academy's Stroud Water Research Center.
The Water Research Center monitors the flow of White Clay Creek and the factors in its basin that change it, for better or worse. From it, researchers can determine which factors affect the ability of other creeks, rivers and streams to sustain life.
The daughter of Gerrish Hill Milliken, Mrs. Stroud was born in New York City and was educated at St. Timothy's School and Sarah Lawrence College. She maintained associations with both in later years, as she did with the Upland Country Day School in Kennett Square.
She was also active in promoting the exchange of students between the United States and nations in South America. Such exchanges, she was convinced, helped improve international relations.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Anne Bradford, Joan Blaine, Agnes Peelle and Cynthia; her sons, Dixon, Morris and Stephen; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, and a sister.
Services will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at her home in West Grove. Burial will be private.
