Notes for Charles Small Jr. PAXSON

Charles S. Paxson Jr., 90, a former administrator who oversaw the growth of several local and city hospitals, died of kidney and heart failure Saturday at his home at Lima Estates, Middletown, Delaware County. He formerly lived in Lansdowne.
Mr. Paxson's 40-year career was in hospital administration and health-care consulting. He retired in 1981 but remained active in the community, including 10 years spent on the Lansdowne Zoning Hearing Board.
Born in the Tioga section of Philadelphia, Mr. Paxson began his career in 1941 as administrator of Delaware County Memorial Hospital, where he helped establish the institution's long-range building expansion.
In 1957, he was named executive vice president and chief executive officer of Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital. During his tenure, the hospital's bed capacity was increased, and a nurses' educational facility was built.
Mr. Paxson changed jobs in 1973 when he became administrative vice president of Temple University Hospital. He remained at Temple until 1976, when he became an executive with a health-care consulting company in Devon.
Mr. Paxson was a member of several professional societies.
His pastimes included dancing, which he enjoyed until a month ago, shuffleboard, and singing with a local choral group.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Katherine Thompson Paxson; two sons, Charles S. and Stephen G.; a sister; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Lansdowne Friends Meeting, 120 Lansdowne Ave. Burial will be private.
