Notes for Francis Joseph Jr. STOKES
F. Joseph Stokes Jr., 81, an industrialist and civic leader, died Thursday at Cathedral Village in Roxborough.
Mr. Stokes was born in Germantown and was a former resident of West Mount Airy.
He was a 1931 graduate of Germantown Friends School and received a degree in chemistry from Haverford College in 1935.
For many years, he was vice president of Stokes Corp., a manufacturing firm founded in 1896 by his father.
Mr. Stokes was a trustee of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. His interest in natural history led him to write two books, Divers and Snorkelers Guide to the Fishes and Sea Life of the Caribbean.
He also was an avid ornithologist and a member of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club.
Mr. Stokes served for many years on the Haverford College Board of Managers, as well as the boards of directors of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania.
To enrich the understanding of Philadelphia's heritage, he wrote a genealogy of three of the region's early Quaker families.
Mr. Stokes was president of the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, Philadelphia's only mid-Victorian museum. In 1987, he and his wife, Charlotte, received the Maxwell Award.
He was active in his community, serving on the board of Germantown Hospital. In 1959, he was elected the first president of the West Mount Airy Neighbors Association.
Besides his wife, Charlotte C. Stokes, Mr. Stokes is survived by sons, Francis J. 3d, Charles C. and Donald W.; a daughter, Katherine Oversmith; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Germantown Friends Meeting, 47 W. Coulter St., Germantown.
