Notes for Martha Eastburn STOKES

Martha Stokes Price, 83, of Bryn Mawr, a philanthropist and former Bryn Mawr College administrator, died of respiratory failure March 21 at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Mrs. Price was the daughter of J. Stogdell Stokes, who as president of the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1933 to 1947 acquired a reputation for fund-raising. She inherited her father's talent and spearheaded a $21 million capital campaign as director of resources at Bryn Mawr College from 1969 to 1978.
"She reached out to those who cared about the college and became friends with people she solicited," said Pat McPherson, Bryn Mawr president from 1978 to 1997, who was college dean during the campaign.
Mrs. Price later served on the college's board, where her shrewd advice was always welcome, McPherson said.
She also served on the board of managers at Haverford College and chaired the board of Montgomery County Day School in Wynnewood.
Mrs. Price grew up in Abington and graduated from Chatham Hall, a private girl's school in Chatham, Va. She attended Bennington College in Vermont before marrying John S. Price in 1943. While raising a family, she taught science at Haverford Friends School and earned a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr, graduating summa cum laude in 1960.
Like her father, Mrs. Price collected 18th-century American furniture, and in the 1960s she was one of the original volunteer guides at the 18th-century Fairmount Park Houses, which the Art Museum administers. She served as guide chairwoman from 1963 to 1966.
Mrs. Price supported numerous organizations, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the American Philosophical Society, and Haverford Friends Meeting, and was active with the American Italy Society of Philadelphia. Her husband is president of the society, which sponsors an Italian film series, a language program, and concerts, and is involved in the campaign to save Venetian art. The couple enjoyed travel to Italy and summers at their vacation home at Quissett Harbor, Mass.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Nicholas and Philip, 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 25 in the Great Hall of M. Carey Thomas Library, 101 N. Merion Ave., Bryn Mawr.
