Notes for John Bancroft Jr. SWAYNE
FORMER MUSHROOM FARMER, 87 John Bancroft Swayne Jr., 87, a retired mushroom grower, died of a heart attack Sunday at Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square.
Mr. Swayne was the son of the man who founded the Kennett Square mushroom industry when he imported spawn (mushroom seeds) from London and began growing them under benches in his father's floral greenhouse.
For many years, Mr. Swayne owned and operated J.B. Swayne & Son Inc., which raised and canned mushrooms and sold spawn. In the mid-1970s, he sold most of the business and retired. His son John B. 3d kept the seed-producing part of the firm.
Born in Kennett Square, Mr. Swayne was a graduate of the George School and of Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics.
After retiring, he spent his winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and his summers in Buck Hill Falls.
He had lived at Crosslands since about 1980.
He is also survived by his wife, Betty M. Fairbank Swayne; sons, Lewis F. and Robert B.; a sister; and seven grandchildren.
