Notes for Jay D. Jr. COOK
Jay D. Cook Jr., 84, of Lexington, longtime professor in Washington and Lee University's School of Commerce, Economics and Politics, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2005. Mr. Cook was born April 26, 1921, in Chester, Pa., and grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He graduated from Washington and Lee in 1944, and served in the Marine Corps during World War II . Mr. Cook received an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate from Ohio State University in 1956. He married Florence in 1946. They had two sons, Jay D. Cook III and Richard Garrett Cook. Mr. Cook taught at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, from 1948 to 1953. He returned to Washington and Lee in 1953 and taught accounting there until he retired in 1991. In addition to his university activities, he was a consultant for Price Waterhouse and on a variety of committees for the American Accounting Association. In 1961 he received a grant from the Ford Foundation. Mr. Cook served as president of the area Mental Health Association and started what is now the Rockbridge Mental Health Clinic. He also served on the board of directors of Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mr. Cook was a lifelong sports enthusiast and was an accomplished needlepoint artist. He is survived by his wife, Florence; son, Gary; three sisters, Jane Mollenhoff, Sarah Collins and Elizabeth Weir; and a brother, Joseph N. Cook. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2005, at Lexington Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to an Alzheimer's association.
