Notes for Palmer M. SHARPLESS

Palmer M. Sharpless International Woodturner
Palmer M. Sharpless, 80 of Newtown, PA died Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at his residence.
Born in Moorestown, N.J., Mr. Sharpless was a graduate of Westtown School Class of 1940 and a graduate of Penn State University Class of 1943. Mr. Sharpless has been a resident of Newtown since 1946 and was the former Head of the Department of Arts at George School in Newtown where he taught woodshop, graphic arts, technical theater and drafting for 38 years, and was instrumental in the development of the arts programs.
Palmer was a member of the Newtown Friends Meeting and its Building and Grounds Committee, a founding and honorary life member of the American Association of Woodturners, a juried member and 3 term president of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, a charter member and past president of the Bucks County Guild of Craftsmen and a Board Member of the Pennsbury Manor Society where he and his wife Joan demonstrated and made his finished products available for the Pennsbury Manor Gift Shop.
Mr. Sharpless was also a life member of the Delaware Valley Wood Carvers Association, a founding member of the American Association of Woodturners where he orchestrated many symposiums for woodturners. Up until his passing, Palmer worked from his Newtown workshop spending his time preparing commission pieces, custom turnings for local furniture manufacturers and specialty home builders, craft sale pieces, architectural turnings and wood turned bowls and vessels from various local woods.
Son of the late Edward Savery and Ruth Palmer Sharpless, he is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Joan Paulhamus Sharpless, his 5 children Herbert Sharpless of Chicago, IL, NancyLynn Sharpless of Ann Arbor, MI, Linda Sharpless of Spruce Pine NC, Betty Sharpless of Ashville NC, and Martin Sharpless of Gaithersburg MD. His sisters and brothers-in-law Alice Koenig of Kennett Square, PA and Mary Louise and Charles R. Swift of Durango, CO, his sister-in-law Evelyn Sharpless of Jennersville, PA and his 3 dear grandchildren Laura, Sarah and Hallie.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the meeting house located at the George School campus. Please use the south entrance off Rt. 413. Come early to park. Service starts promptly at 2 PM. Interment will be private. Contributions in his memory may be made to George School, Advancement Office, P.O. Box 4438, Newtown, PA 18940 or the Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court St. Newtown, PA 18940.
