Notes for James Paul HOPKINSON

James P. Hopkinson, 84, of Gladwyne, a retired department store executive, died March 28 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania of complications from a fall at home.
Mr. Hopkinson grew up in Malvern and Chestnut Hill, and graduated from the Haverford School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
He managed the former American Opera Company and the Bach Festival Chorus in Philadelphia and the Lambertville Music Circus in New Jersey before switching to a career in retailing. He worked in the finance office at Blauner's and in 1954 joined the finance department at John Wanamaker. In 1987 he retired as Wanamakers' vice president and treasurer.
Mr. Hopkinson was active with many organizations, including the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association, Partners for English as a Second Language, and Meals on Wheels. He served on several boards, including those of the Professionals' Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control, the New School of Music, and the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence - his ancestor Francis Hopkinson was a signer. Mr. Hopkinson was also dean of the Shakspere Society of Philadelphia.
He was passionate about music, and sang with choral groups and church choirs and attended concerts at the Academy of Music and Kimmel Center, his family said. He had a marvelous vegetable garden, they said, and tended chickens, pheasants and beehives.
He and his wife of 33 years, Rachel Read Hopkinson, enjoyed bicycling, birding and nature walks on travels around the world. She died in January.
Mr. Hopkinson is survived by sons James Jr. and David; daughters Maryann Ramos and Sarah; four stepchildren; a sister; a brother; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also was predeceased by his former wife, C. Evelyn Hopkinson.
