Notes for John Eastburn Jr. MCVAUGH
John "Jack'' Eastburn McVaugh Jr., 83, of Medford Leas, local business owner and founder of Arizona School Choice Trust, died Jan. 29, 2009, from heart failure.
Jack was born in Riverton and was a lifelong member of Westfield Friends Meeting. He completed his secondary education at George School, where he met his wife of 63 years, Isabelle Ewing.
He served in the Army during World War II and earned his Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950.
He was president of the family business, McVaugh Construction Co. in Riverton, until his retirement. One of his proudest achievements was the construction of Medford Leas, a life care facility. He served on many boards including the Burlington County Planning Board, the board of Cadbury retirement facility and Jeannes Hospital. He also was a member of PRC Rotary Club.
He and his family were summer residents of Barnegat Light, where they had many friends.
Upon his retirement, Jack and his wife moved to Scottsdale, AZ, where he constructed several homes. He was a pioneer in solar energy and his own home was energy independent.
He was physically active throughout his life and was an avid tennis player.
Jack's lifelong Libertarian and Quaker beliefs inspired him to become a leader for school choice. In 1990, he and his wife founded Arizona School Choice Trust, which provides tuition grants to low-income families so that their children can attend the school of their choice. He served as president and he and his wife devoted boundless energy to the movement. Currently, this program benefits 1203 children.
The Mcvaughs recently moved back to Medford Leas.
He is survived by his brother, Edwin S. McVaugh of Medford Leas; wife and three children, Jay McVaugh of Sedona AZ; Mary Shannon of Chicora, PA and Sally McEwen of Atlanta, GA. He also is survived by three grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Medford Leas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arizona School Choice Trust, throu the Web site www.asct.org, or by mail at P.O. Box 1616, Glendale AZ 85311.
Arrangements were by Lewis Funeral Home, Moorestown.
